You are right that there must be a balance between governance and flexibility. This balance is hard to define and harder to maintain.

My point is that too often the one-unified-view goal is completely wrong and must be chanllenged often.

The business market is changing all the time (see the recent pandemic) and different people and departments in the organization are exploring new ideas and views all the time. If you are building for the last three years the "perfect" data warehouse or data lake, you will delay your data plan in three years, while building, and you will end up with an obselete system, even before it is done.

IT should give tools for the smart people in your organization and not forece them to work in a single schema mind set.

I'll end up reminding that there should be a balance and I'm enforcing here mostly the missing part of the balance in many companies, especially in Financial Services.
